Pernicious Anemia and Autoimmune Gastritis

Autoimmune gastritis, leading to pernicious anemia, is characterized by the presence of serum antibodies to gastric parietal cells and intrinsic factor. Parietal cell antibodies occur in >90% of patients with pernicious anemia and in 5% of healthy adults. Antibody titer is reported to correlate with the severity of gastric atrophy.
